When you calculate speed using the formula S = D/T, you're always getting average speed. The total distance divided by total time. But during that journey, your actual speed at any given moment — your instantaneous speed — was constantly changing.
This matters more than it sounds. Say you drive 100 km in 1 hour. Your average speed is 100 km/h. But you stopped for 5 minutes at a petrol station, sat at red lights for 8 minutes, and hit 120 km/h on the expressway at some points. The formula captures none of that nuance — it just gives you the net result.
For most practical purposes — travel planning, physics homework, logistics estimates — average speed is exactly what you need. Instantaneous speed is the domain of speedometers, GPS sensors, and sports timing systems.
How Students Should Approach SDT Problems in Exams
Physics and maths exams love SDT questions because they test whether you understand relationships, not just arithmetic. Here's how to approach them without losing marks to silly errors.
Step 1: Identify what's given and what's asked
Read the question twice. Write down the known values with their units. Circle the unknown. This takes 10 seconds and prevents the most common mistake: solving for the wrong variable.
Step 2: Check unit consistency before you do anything
If speed is in km/h and time is in minutes, convert time to hours before proceeding. Write out the conversion explicitly — examiners often award marks for showing working.
Step 3: Apply the formula, then sanity-check
After getting your answer, ask: does this make sense? A walking speed of 500 km/h doesn't. A car journey of 2 km taking 3 hours doesn't. Quick sanity checks catch arithmetic slips before they cost marks.

A logistics manager in Chennai planning a same-day delivery route needs to know: if the van travels at an average of 35 km/h in city traffic, how many delivery points can it cover in a 6-hour window, assuming an average of 8 km between stops?
Distance coverable = 35 × 6 = 210 km. At 8 km per stop, that's roughly 26 stops — minus time for actual deliveries, traffic variability, and a lunch break. In practice, experienced logistics planners target 15-18 stops as realistic. The formula sets the ceiling; experience sets the realistic target.
Common Mistakes to Stop Making Right Now
These aren't obscure edge cases — these are errors that come up constantly in classrooms, on travel forums, and in real planning mistakes.
Mistake 1: Forgetting to convert minutes to hours
Entering "30 minutes" as "30" when speed is in km/h gives you a distance 60x too large. 30 minutes = 0.5 hours. Always.
Mistake 2: Confusing average speed with the speed for half the journey
If you drive the first half of a route at 40 km/h and the second half at 60 km/h, your average speed is NOT 50 km/h. It's 48 km/h. The slower leg takes more time, which drags the average down. This is a surprisingly common misconception even among adults.
Mistake 3: Using Google Maps ETA as "driving time"
Google Maps builds in traffic estimates, but assumes you're moving the whole time. Fuel stops, food breaks, toll queues — none of that is in the ETA. Add 15-20% buffer for any drive over 3 hours.
