How Broken Link Detection Works
Every link on the web communicates through HTTP status codes — standardized numeric responses that tell browsers (and tools like this one) whether a requested resource exists. The Broken Link Checker sends a validation request to each URL and interprets the server's response code.
─────────────────────────────────────
2xx (200–299) → ✅ Link is Valid
3xx (300–399) → 🔄 Redirect Exists
4xx (400–499) → ❌ Client Error (Broken)
5xx (500–599) → ❌ Server Error (Broken)
Network Error → ⚠️ Unreachable / CORS Blocked
| Code | Name | Meaning | SEO Impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| 200 | OK | Page loads successfully | ✅ No issue |
| 301 | Moved Permanently | Redirected to new URL | 🔄 Minor (passes equity) |
| 302 | Found (Temp) | Temporary redirect | 🔄 Monitor |
| 404 | Not Found | Page doesn't exist | ❌ Harmful |
| 410 | Gone | Page permanently deleted | ❌ Fix ASAP |
| 500 | Server Error | Server-side failure | ❌ Critical |
| 403 | Forbidden | Access denied by server | ⚠️ Check intent |
Note: Some URLs may show as "Unreachable" due to CORS (Cross-Origin Resource Sharing) restrictions — where the target server blocks browser-based requests. This does not always mean the link is broken. Always manually verify flagged links before removing them.
Practical Examples
Riya Sharma — Mumbai, India
Riya runs a fashion blog and noticed her Google ranking dropped. She pasted 15 internal links from her old posts into the checker. The tool identified 4 broken links pointing to deleted product pages (404 errors) and 2 redirects to competitor websites.
Arjun Mehta — Bengaluru, India
Arjun manages an e-commerce dropshipping store with 200+ product pages. He extracted external links from his supplier reference pages and checked 20 at a time. The tool flagged 6 supplier product URLs returning 404 — meaning those products were discontinued.
Markus Weber — Berlin, Germany
Markus built a resource directory website linking to 50+ external tools. Using this checker in batches of 20, he discovered 8 links had moved (301 redirects) and 3 were returning 500 server errors — meaning those tools were down or deprecated.
Priya Nair — Kochi, India
Priya runs a travel blog and regularly links to hotel booking pages. She checks her top-performing posts monthly. This month, 2 resort links returned 404 (hotels closed) and 1 returned a 302 redirect to a booking aggregator instead of the original property page.
What Is a Broken Link Checker?
A broken link checker is a tool that tests whether URLs on a website are active and returning a successful HTTP response. When a link is "broken," it typically means the destination page has been deleted, moved without a redirect, or the server hosting it has gone offline. For website owners, broken links are a silent problem — visitors hit error pages, and search engine crawlers waste their crawl budget on dead ends.
From an SEO perspective, broken links are more than just a nuisance. They can dilute link equity, create poor user experience signals, and prevent crawlers from indexing your content efficiently. Google has publicly stated that crawl budget matters for large websites, and unnecessary 404 pages consume it without benefit. Regular link audits using a broken link checker help you identify and fix these issues proactively.
Beyond SEO, broken links also affect credibility. A resource page or blog post with multiple dead links sends a signal to readers that the content isn't being maintained. Whether you're a blogger, e-commerce store owner, or digital agency managing client sites, checking for broken links should be part of your regular website maintenance workflow.
