⚠️ Safety Disclaimer: This is an estimate only. Never drive after drinking any amount of alcohol. Individual metabolism, food, medications, and hydration significantly affect real BAC. This tool is not a substitute for a certified breathalyser or medical advice.
How to Use the Blood Alcohol Calculator — Step-by-Step Guide
Enter Your Body Weight
Type your current body weight in the field provided. Then select whether you are entering it in kilograms or pounds from the dropdown. The calculator converts automatically, so use whichever unit you prefer.
Select Your Biological Sex
Choose Male or Female from the dropdown. Biological sex is a key variable in the Widmark formula because it determines the body water distribution constant, which directly affects how alcohol is diluted in your system.
Add Your Drink Details
Enter the number of drinks consumed, the ABV (alcohol by volume percentage) of those drinks, and the volume of each drink in millilitres. For beer, use 350 ml and 5% ABV. For wine, use 150 ml and 12% ABV. For a spirits shot, use 45 ml and 40% ABV.
Enter Hours Since First Drink
Input how many hours have passed since you had your first drink. You can use decimals — for example, enter 1.5 for one hour and thirty minutes. This allows the calculator to subtract the alcohol already metabolised by your body.
Click Calculate BAC
Press the Calculate BAC button. Your estimated BAC percentage, impairment level, sober-up time, and the approximate clock time when you will be sober are all displayed instantly. You can also press Enter on the last input field to trigger the calculation.

Widmark Formula — How Blood Alcohol Content is Calculated
The blood alcohol content calculator relies on the Widmark formula, the most widely used mathematical model for BAC estimation. Understanding it helps you interpret your results accurately.
BAC (%) = (Alcohol Consumed in grams ÷ (Body Weight in grams × r)) × 100 − (0.015 × Hours)Where:
Alcohol (g) = Number of drinks × Volume per drink (ml) × (ABV / 100) × 0.789 (density of ethanol) | r = Widmark constant: 0.68 for males, 0.55 for females | 0.015 = Average hourly metabolism rate (% BAC per hour) | Body Weight in grams = Weight in kg × 1000
Step 1 — Calculate Pure Alcohol
Multiply the number of drinks by volume per drink in ml, then multiply by ABV divided by 100, then multiply by 0.789. This gives you the grams of pure ethanol consumed. For example, 3 beers of 350 ml at 5% ABV = 3 × 350 × 0.05 × 0.789 = 41.42 grams of pure alcohol.
Step 2 — Apply Widmark Equation
Divide the grams of alcohol by body weight in grams multiplied by the r-constant. For a 70 kg male: 70 × 1000 × 0.68 = 47,600. Then 41.42 ÷ 47,600 × 100 = 0.087% BAC at peak (before metabolism). Subtract 0.015 × hours elapsed to find current BAC. Our BMR Calculator can help you understand your overall metabolic rate alongside this tool.
Step 3 — Subtract Metabolised Alcohol
The human liver metabolises alcohol at approximately 0.015% BAC per hour for most adults. Multiply hours elapsed since your first drink by 0.015, then subtract from the peak BAC. If the result is negative, BAC is 0% — meaning you are fully sober. The minimum displayed BAC is always 0.000%.
Practical Blood Alcohol Content Examples with Calculations
These real-world examples demonstrate how the blood alcohol calculator works. All figures are mathematically verified using the Widmark formula.
🇮🇳 Rohan, Mumbai — Party Night
Pure alcohol: 4 × 350 × 0.05 × 0.789 = 55.23 g
Peak BAC: 55.23 ÷ (75,000 × 0.68) × 100 = 0.108%
After 1.5 hrs: 0.108 − (0.015 × 1.5) = 0.086% BAC
🇮🇳 Priya, Delhi — 2 Glasses of Wine
Pure alcohol: 2 × 150 × 0.12 × 0.789 = 28.40 g
Peak BAC: 28.40 ÷ (55,000 × 0.55) × 100 = 0.094% BAC
🇮🇳 Arjun, Bengaluru — After-Work Drinks
Pure alcohol: 2 × 500 × 0.05 × 0.789 = 39.45 g
Peak BAC: 39.45 ÷ (80,000 × 0.68) × 100 = 0.072%
After 2 hrs: 0.072 − 0.030 = 0.042% BAC
🌍 James, New York — Casual Evening
Pure alcohol: 2 × 355 × 0.05 × 0.789 = 28.05 g
Peak BAC: 28.05 ÷ (90,000 × 0.68) × 100 = 0.046%
After 3 hrs: 0.046 − 0.045 = 0.001% BAC
What is a Blood Alcohol Calculator and Why You Need It
A blood alcohol calculator is a digital tool that estimates your Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) — the concentration of alcohol present in your bloodstream — using known physiological data and a validated mathematical formula. BAC is expressed as a percentage: a BAC of 0.08% means there are 0.08 grams of alcohol per 100 ml of blood.
Understanding your BAC is essential for personal safety, legal compliance, and responsible decision-making. In India, the Motor Vehicles Act sets the legal limit at just 0.03% BAC — one of the strictest in the world. Even crossing this threshold by a small margin can result in arrest, licence cancellation, and heavy fines.
Beyond driving, knowing your BAC helps you gauge how alcohol is affecting your coordination, reaction time, and judgement at social gatherings, office parties, and events. Studies consistently show that judgment is impaired at BAC levels well below the point of feeling "drunk," making self-assessment unreliable without a calculation tool.
This calculator is designed for everyone — from occasional social drinkers wanting to stay safe, to event organisers setting guidelines, to health-conscious individuals tracking alcohol intake. It is especially useful for young adults, people with lower body weight, and anyone new to understanding how alcohol affects the body.
The tool is also valuable for educators, healthcare professionals, and responsible drinking awareness campaigns who need a quick, accurate way to demonstrate the effects of alcohol consumption across different body types and drink quantities. You can also use our Calorie Calculator to understand the energy content of alcoholic beverages as part of a broader wellness approach.
Remember: this calculator provides an estimate based on averages. Food intake, hydration level, liver health, genetics, and medications all influence real BAC. Use this as a guide and always err on the side of safety.
