How JPG to WebP Conversion Works
The tool uses the browser's built-in Canvas API and FileReader API — no external library, no server, no plugin. The entire process runs inside your browser tab.
Step 2: An <img> element decodes the JPEG pixel data into memory
Step 3: canvas.drawImage() renders the full-resolution image onto a canvas
Step 4: canvas.toDataURL('image/webp', quality/100) encodes the canvas as WebP
Step 5: A blob URL is generated and a download link is triggered automatically
The quality value is passed as a decimal — a slider value of 85 becomes 0.85. WebP's encoder uses this to determine how aggressively to compress DCT blocks, similar to JPG but with a more efficient algorithm. At quality 85, WebP typically produces a file 28–32% smaller than a JPG at the same quality. At quality 90+, the savings narrow but the output remains visually lossless for most images.
Practical Examples
Ankit is optimizing a client's e-commerce site for Core Web Vitals. The product image folder has 200+ JPG files averaging 480 KB each. He converts key above-the-fold images to WebP at quality 82, cutting load time significantly without any visible quality loss.
Sneha uploads recipe photos to her WordPress blog weekly. Her host has a storage limit, and JPG files from her DSLR regularly exceed 3 MB. Converting to WebP at quality 88 reduces each photo to under 1.8 MB without any recipe content looking washed out.
Hiroshi manages paid ad campaigns where landing page speed directly affects Quality Score. He converts all hero and CTA section images from JPG to WebP at quality 80 to pass Google PageSpeed image recommendations without touching the layout.
What Is WebP and Why Convert JPG to It?
WebP is a modern image format developed by Google that delivers superior compression compared to JPG and PNG. It uses both lossy and lossless compression modes and supports transparency via an alpha channel. For websites, WebP is the preferred format because smaller images mean faster page loads, lower data usage for visitors, and better search engine rankings.
JPG has been the default photo format for decades and remains excellent for compatibility. But when you control the environment — a website, app, or CMS you manage — switching to WebP is a straightforward performance improvement. Google's own PageSpeed Insights and Lighthouse tools actively flag JPG images as optimization opportunities and suggest serving them in next-gen formats like WebP.
All major browsers have fully supported WebP since 2021. Safari, the last major holdout, added WebP support in version 14. If you are building anything for the modern web, WebP is a safe and recommended choice that will make your pages load faster for every visitor.

Is this JPG to WebP converter free to use?
Yes, this tool is completely free with no account, no watermark, no usage limits, and no hidden charges.
Does my image get sent to a server?
No. Conversion happens entirely inside your browser using the Canvas API. Your images never leave your device.
How much smaller will the WebP file be?
Typically 25–35% smaller than the original JPG at equivalent visual quality, though results vary by image content and quality setting.
What WebP quality setting should I choose?
For web images use 80–85. For high-quality product photos or client deliverables use 90–95. Anything below 70 may show visible compression artifacts.
Can I convert JPEG files as well as JPG?
Yes. JPG and JPEG are the same format with different file extensions. This tool accepts both .jpg and .jpeg files.
Will browsers support the WebP output?
Yes. All modern browsers — Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari 14+, and Opera — fully support WebP. It is now the standard web image format.
Does converting JPG to WebP add transparency?
No. Since JPG has no transparency data, the converted WebP will also have a solid background. WebP transparency only applies when converting from PNG or similar formats.
Can I convert multiple JPG files at once?
The tool currently processes one file at a time. Upload, convert, download, then repeat for the next file.
Why should I convert JPG to WebP?
WebP files are smaller, which means faster page loads, lower bandwidth costs, and better Core Web Vitals scores — all of which help SEO and user experience.
Is it safe to convert confidential images here?
Yes. Because everything runs locally in your browser, no image data is transmitted anywhere. It is as private as using desktop software.
