How the Conversion Works

Base64 is a binary-to-text encoding scheme. It represents binary data (like an image) using only 64 printable ASCII characters (A–Z, a–z, 0–9, +, /). This makes it safe to embed binary content inside text-based formats.

Image → Base64 (Encoding)

Base64 String = btoa( binary_representation_of_image )

Data URI = "data:" + mimeType + ";base64," + Base64String

Example: data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAA...

The browser's FileReader.readAsDataURL() reads the raw binary image file and converts it to a Base64-encoded data URI automatically. The output size is approximately 4/3 × the original binary size (a ~33% increase).

Base64 → Image (Decoding)

If input has data URI prefix → use as-is for <img src>
If input is raw Base64 → prepend "data:image/png;base64,"

Image binary = atob( Base64String )
Blob = new Blob( [binary] , { type: mimeType } )
Object URL = URL.createObjectURL( Blob )

The tool detects whether your pasted string already contains a data URI prefix. If not, it assumes PNG and prepends the correct header. The decoded blob is displayed as a preview image and offered as a downloadable file.

Practical Examples

đŸ‡ŽđŸ‡ŗ Priya — Mumbai, Maharashtra
Priya is a front-end developer who wants to embed a small company logo (12 KB PNG) directly into her HTML email template so it renders even when images are blocked by corporate email clients.
✅ Result: She drops the PNG into the tool, copies the data URI, and pastes it into <img src="data:image/png;base64,..."> — logo shows in every email client without any external host.
đŸ‡ŽđŸ‡ŗ Arjun — Bangalore, Karnataka
Arjun is building a React Native app that stores user avatars offline in AsyncStorage. The storage format is JSON, which cannot hold binary — so he needs Base64 strings.
✅ Result: He converts each avatar PNG to Base64 using this tool, stores the string in AsyncStorage, and reconstructs the image on-device without any API call.
🇩đŸ‡Ē Klaus — Berlin, Germany
Klaus received a Base64-encoded image string in a webhook payload from a third-party API. He needs to quickly preview what the image looks like without writing a script.
✅ Result: He pastes the Base64 string into the "Base64 → Image" tab, sees the decoded preview instantly, and downloads it as a PNG — all in under 5 seconds.
đŸ‡ŽđŸ‡ŗ Sneha — Chennai, Tamil Nadu
Sneha is configuring a CSS sprite for a small icon library. She wants to inline a 2 KB WebP icon as a background-image to eliminate one HTTP request on her e-commerce site.
✅ Result: She converts the WebP icon to Base64, then uses it in CSS as background-image: url('data:image/webp;base64,...') — one fewer network round-trip per page load.

What Is Base64 Image Encoding?

Base64 image encoding is the process of converting a binary image file into a string of printable ASCII characters. The resulting string can be embedded directly inside HTML, CSS, JavaScript, JSON, XML, or any other text-based format without needing to host the image separately. This technique is widely used in email templates, data URIs, offline web apps, and API payloads.

The term "Base64" refers to the 64-character alphabet used in the encoding: uppercase A–Z, lowercase a–z, digits 0–9, plus (+), and slash (/), with equals (=) used for padding. Every 3 bytes of binary data map to exactly 4 Base64 characters, which is why the encoded output is always about one-third larger than the original file.

Decoding reverses the process — the Base64 string is converted back to binary, reconstructing the original image perfectly. Because Base64 is a lossless encoding (not compression), the decoded image is byte-for-byte identical to the original.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this tool free to use?
Yes, this tool is completely free. There are no hidden charges, registration requirements, or usage limits.
Is my image uploaded to any server?
No. All conversion happens entirely in your browser using the FileReader API and canvas. Your image never leaves your device.
What image formats are supported?
The tool supports JPG/JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP, BMP, and SVG — any format your browser can display natively.
What is the maximum image size I can convert?
There is no hard server limit since processing is client-side. However, very large images (above 10 MB) may slow down older devices due to browser memory limits.
Why is Base64 encoding used for images?
Base64 encoding allows binary image data to be embedded directly inside text-based formats like HTML, CSS, JSON, or XML, eliminating the need for a separate image file request.
Does Base64 encoding increase the image file size?
Yes. Base64 encoding increases the data size by approximately 33% compared to the original binary file. This is a trade-off for embedding convenience.
How do I embed a Base64 image in HTML?
Use the data URI format: <img src="data:image/png;base64,YOUR_BASE64_STRING">. The tool outputs the complete data URI ready to paste.
Can I use Base64 images in CSS?
Yes. Use it as a background: background-image: url('data:image/png;base64,YOUR_STRING'). This is common for small icons and sprites.
What if the Base64 string I paste is invalid?
The tool will show a validation error and not attempt to render an image. Make sure your string is a valid Base64-encoded image, optionally prefixed with a data URI header.
Does this tool work on mobile devices?
Yes. The tool is fully responsive and works on smartphones and tablets. On mobile, you can select images from your gallery or camera roll.
