How It Works
The tool builds a meta robots tag using the format <meta name="robots" content="directive1, directive2">. Every directive you select is added into the content attribute, separated by commas. If you enter advanced values like max-snippet or max-image-preview, they get appended in the correct key:value format search engines expect.
The generator also produces an X-Robots-Tag version of the same rule set. This is a server-side HTTP header equivalent, useful for non-HTML files such as PDFs, images or downloadable documents where you cannot place a meta tag inside a head section.
Practical Examples
E-commerce Thank You Page (India)
A Delhi-based online store blocks its order confirmation page from appearing in search results.
<meta name="robots" content="noindex, nofollow">Staging Site (India)
A Bengaluru startup adds this to every page on their staging domain before launch.
<meta name="robots" content="noindex, nofollow, noarchive">Print Version Pages
Blocking duplicate print-friendly versions of blog articles from being indexed separately.
<meta name="robots" content="noindex">US Blog Tag Archive
A US content site limits snippet length on thin tag archive pages while still allowing indexing.
<meta name="robots" content="max-snippet:100, max-image-preview:large">What Is a Noindex Tag?
A noindex tag is an instruction placed inside a webpage's HTML head, or sent as an HTTP header, telling search engine crawlers not to show that page in search results. It's commonly used on thank-you pages, admin panels, staging environments, duplicate content, or internal search result pages that add no value to organic traffic.
Unlike blocking a page in robots.txt, a noindex tag still allows the page to be crawled, so the crawler can actually read the directive and remove it from the index cleanly. Read more in our detailed guide: How to Stop Google From Indexing Pages You Don't Want Seen.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this tool free to use?
Yes, basic usage is available at no cost. Free users can run the tool a set number of times per day. Registered users and Pro members get higher daily limits and character allowances. The core feature works exactly the same for everyone.
What does a noindex tag do?
A noindex tag tells search engine crawlers not to include a specific page in their search results, even if the page can still be crawled and linked to.
What's the difference between noindex and robots.txt disallow?
Disallow in robots.txt stops crawling, but a blocked page can sometimes still appear in results without a description. Noindex explicitly removes the page from the index while still allowing it to be crawled.
Can I combine noindex with nofollow?
Yes, you can combine multiple directives in one tag, such as noindex, nofollow, to stop indexing and stop link equity from passing through that page.
Does noindex remove a page already indexed by Google?
Adding noindex will eventually remove an already indexed page once Google recrawls it. This can take a few days to a few weeks depending on crawl frequency.
What is the X-Robots-Tag header used for?
X-Robots-Tag is an HTTP header alternative to the meta tag. It is useful for non-HTML files like PDFs or images where a meta tag cannot be placed.
Should I use noindex on my whole website?
No, noindex should only be applied to specific pages you don't want in search results, like thank-you pages, staging sites, or duplicate content pages.
Will this tool work for Bing and other search engines?
Yes, you can target the generic robots directive which most search engines respect, or select googlebot or bingbot specifically for engine-specific rules.
