How IP Detection Works

When you load this page, your browser makes a request to an IP detection API. Because every internet request automatically includes the sender's public IP address in its headers, the API can read your IP and return it without you entering anything.

Technical flow:
1. Browser loads this page → JavaScript runs
2. JS sends a request to api.ipify.org to retrieve your public IP
3. JS sends a second request to ipapi.co to retrieve geo and ISP details for that IP
4. Results are displayed in the card above — nothing is stored on this server

The public IP shown is the address your Internet Service Provider (ISP) assigns to your router or device. It is the address the outside world sees when you browse the web. It is different from your private IP (like 192.168.1.x), which is only visible within your home or office network.

Why location may not be exact: IP geolocation works by matching your IP against databases of ISP-registered locations. These are updated periodically but are not always precise — they are typically accurate to the city or state level, not street address level. Mobile data IPs often show the ISP's regional hub city rather than your actual location.

What Is an IP Address?

An IP address (Internet Protocol address) is a unique numerical label assigned to every device connected to a network. Think of it as a postal address for your internet connection — without it, servers would have no way to send data back to the right place when you make a request. Every website visit, email sent, and video streamed involves your IP address being transmitted as part of the communication.

There are two types of IP addresses you encounter in daily use. Your public IP is assigned by your ISP and is visible to every website and service you connect to on the internet — this is what this tool shows. Your private IP is assigned by your router and is only visible within your local network (home, office, campus). Private IPs typically follow the 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x format and are never directly accessible from the internet.

In India, IP addresses are a practical concern for developers, gamers, remote workers, and small business owners — from whitelisting IPs on cloud servers to configuring access controls on office routers. Understanding your public IP is one of the most fundamental networking skills, and this tool makes finding it instant and effortless on any device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this What Is My IP tool free?

Yes, the What Is My IP tool on StoreDropship is completely free to use with no signup or account required. Refresh and copy as many times as you need.

What is a public IP address?

A public IP address is the unique address assigned to your internet connection by your ISP. It identifies your network on the internet — similar to a postal address for your connection. Every website and server you contact can see this address.

What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?

IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses in the format 192.168.1.1 and supports about 4.3 billion unique addresses. IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses in a longer hexadecimal format and supports a virtually unlimited number of addresses. Most connections today still primarily use IPv4, though IPv6 adoption is growing globally.

Can websites see my IP address?

Yes. Every website you visit can see your public IP address. It is transmitted automatically with every request your browser makes — this is how servers know where to send the response. Your IP is visible in the server's access logs by default.

Does my IP address reveal my exact location?

No. Your IP address reveals only your approximate location — typically at city or state level — based on your ISP's registered infrastructure. It does not reveal your exact street address, GPS coordinates, or personal identity.

Why does my location appear wrong on IP lookup tools?

IP geolocation databases map IPs to locations based on ISP registration data, which can be outdated or imprecise. Mobile networks and ISPs that route traffic through central hubs may show a different city than where you physically are. This is normal and expected.

Will my IP address change?

Most home broadband and mobile connections use dynamic IP addresses, which can change when your router restarts or periodically as your ISP reassigns them. Business and server connections often use static IPs that remain fixed. VPNs also change your visible IP to that of the VPN server.

What is my private IP address?

Your private IP is assigned by your router and is only visible within your local network. It typically starts with 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x. This tool shows your public IP — the address visible to the internet — not your private local network address.

How do I hide my IP address?

You can hide your public IP using a VPN (Virtual Private Network), a proxy server, or the Tor network. Each method routes your traffic through an intermediary server, replacing your visible IP with that server's address. VPNs are the most commonly used method for everyday privacy.

Can I use this tool on mobile?

Yes. The What Is My IP tool is fully responsive and works on all smartphones and tablets. It detects your public IP whether you are on Wi-Fi or mobile data, and the displayed IP will differ between the two since they are different network connections.
