You have probably seen a long string of random-looking characters — something like SGVsbG8gV29ybGQ= — and wondered what on earth it is. That is Base64. And once you understand it, you will start spotting it everywhere: API headers, email attachments, HTML image tags, config files. So What Exactly Is Base64?

Base64 is a way to represent binary data using only printable text characters. The name comes from the fact that it uses 64 specific ASCII characters — A through Z, a through z, 0 through 9, plus + and /. That is it. Just 64 characters and sometimes a padding = sign.

How Does Base64 Encoding Actually Work?
