How IP Geolocation Works
Every device on the internet is assigned an IP (Internet Protocol) address by its ISP. This address acts as a return label — it tells other servers where to send the data back to. IP geolocation databases map these addresses to approximate real-world locations by analysing routing data, ISP records, and registration information.
1. Your browser sends the IP query to a geolocation API
2. The API checks its database:
IP → ASN → ISP → Country → Region → City3. Additional fields are resolved: timezone, lat/lng, mobile flag, proxy flag
4. The JSON response is parsed and displayed in the result cards
IPv4 range:
0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255 (~4.3 billion addresses)IPv6 range:
0000:: to ffff:ffff:ffff:ffff:ffff:ffff:ffff:ffff (~340 undecillion addresses)Private ranges (not geolocatable):
10.x.x.x, 172.16-31.x.x, 192.168.x.xGeolocation accuracy varies by IP type. Residential ISP addresses typically resolve to the correct city. Mobile carrier IPs often resolve to the carrier's hub city rather than the device's exact location. Data centre and VPN IPs resolve to the server's physical location, not the end user.
Practical Examples
What Is an IP Address Lookup?
An IP address lookup — also called IP geolocation — is the process of determining real-world information associated with an IP address. Every device connected to the internet has a public IP address assigned by its ISP. This address contains embedded routing information that geolocation databases can decode to identify the approximate country, region, city, and network provider associated with it.
IP lookups are used for a wide range of purposes: network diagnostics, cybersecurity investigations, content localisation, fraud detection, and verifying VPN or proxy connections. Web developers use them to understand where their traffic is coming from. System administrators use them to trace unauthorised access attempts. Individuals use them to understand what information their IP address reveals about their location.
It is important to understand the limits: an IP lookup tells you where the ISP's network infrastructure is, not the exact physical address of the device. A mobile phone on Jio in Jaipur might show an IP registered to Jio's hub in Mumbai. A user on a VPN will show the VPN server's location entirely. These distinctions matter when interpreting results.

Is this IP address lookup tool free?
Yes, the IP address lookup tool on StoreDropship is completely free. No account, no download, and no usage limit.
What information does an IP lookup return?
The tool returns the IP address, country, region, city, ISP or organisation, timezone, latitude, longitude, and whether the IP is associated with a mobile network, proxy, or hosting provider.
Can I look up my own IP address?
Yes. Click the My IP button and the tool will automatically detect your public IP and display its details instantly.
Does it support IPv6 addresses?
Yes. The tool supports both IPv4 (e.g. 203.0.113.1) and IPv6 (e.g. 2001:db8::1) address formats.
How accurate is the IP geolocation?
IP geolocation is accurate to the country level in almost all cases, and to the city level in most cases. However, it reflects the location of the ISP or data centre, not necessarily the exact physical location of the user.
Can I look up a private or local IP address?
No. Private IP ranges like 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x and 172.16–31.x.x are not routable on the public internet and cannot be geolocated.
Why does my IP show a different city than where I am?
IP geolocation maps to the location of your ISP's nearest gateway or data centre, which may be in a different city from your physical location. VPNs will also show the VPN server's location instead of yours.
Does this tool store or log my IP address?
No. StoreDropship does not store, log or share IP addresses looked up through this tool. The query goes directly to a third-party geolocation API.
Can I use this to trace a hacker or abuser?
This tool gives you the approximate location and ISP of an IP address. For legal tracing, you would need to contact the ISP directly with a formal request or involve law enforcement.
What is the difference between a public and private IP?
A public IP is assigned by your ISP and is visible on the internet. A private IP is assigned by your router for devices within your local network and is not visible externally.
