How It Works

The Image Resizer uses the browser's built-in HTML5 Canvas API to draw your uploaded image at the new dimensions you specify. Here's the internal flow:

1. FileReader API reads your selected image file and converts it to a data URL. An Image object is created from that URL and loaded into memory.

2. Canvas drawing — a hidden <canvas> element is set to your target width × height. The image is drawn onto the canvas at those dimensions using drawImage(). The browser handles bicubic-style interpolation for smooth scaling.

3. toDataURL() exports the canvas content to the chosen format (JPEG, PNG, or WebP) as a base64 data URL, which is shown in the preview and used for download.

Aspect ratio formula: When locked, the tool calculates the ratio r = originalWidth / originalHeight. Changing width sets newHeight = Math.round(newWidth / r), and changing height sets newWidth = Math.round(newHeight * r).

Practical Examples

đŸ‡ŽđŸ‡ŗ Indian E-Commerce Product Image (Flipkart / Meesho)

Flipkart recommends product images of at least 1000×1000 px. Use the tool to resize your product photo to exactly 1000×1000, export as JPEG, and upload directly — no design software needed.

đŸ‡ŽđŸ‡ŗ WhatsApp Status & DP (India)

WhatsApp status works best at 1080×1920 px (9:16 ratio). Select the Instagram Story preset, upload your image, and download a perfectly sized status graphic in seconds.

🌍 Blog Featured Image (WordPress)

Most WordPress themes expect featured images around 1200×628 px. Resize any photo to these dimensions and export as WebP to improve your page load speed and Core Web Vitals score.

đŸ‡ŽđŸ‡ŗ Government / School Document Upload (India)

Many Indian government portals (IRCTC, university admissions) require passport-size photos under specific pixel dimensions — often 200×230 px. Use custom dimensions to meet exact requirements without visiting a studio.

What Is an Image Resizer?

An image resizer is a tool that changes the pixel dimensions of a digital image — making it larger or smaller — while preserving as much visual quality as possible. Instead of installing software like Photoshop or GIMP, you can resize images directly in your browser in seconds.

Common use cases include preparing images for social media, e-commerce listings, website thumbnails, government forms, and email attachments where file size or dimension limits apply.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this tool free to use?

Yes, basic usage is available at no cost. Free users can run the tool a set number of times per day. Registered users and Pro members get higher daily limits and character allowances. The core feature works exactly the same for everyone.

Does the Image Resizer upload my image to a server?

No. All resizing happens entirely in your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API. Your image never leaves your device, ensuring complete privacy.

What image formats are supported?

You can upload JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, and BMP files. Output can be downloaded as JPEG, PNG, or WebP.

Can I maintain the original aspect ratio?

Yes. Enable the Lock Aspect Ratio toggle before entering dimensions. When you change width, height adjusts automatically and vice versa.

What is the maximum image size I can resize?

The tool handles images up to the memory limits of your browser. Most modern browsers support large images without issues. If the browser runs out of memory it will show an error.

Will resizing reduce image quality?

Enlarging an image beyond its original dimensions may reduce sharpness. Reducing dimensions generally maintains good quality, especially with PNG or WebP output.

Can I resize images for social media?

Absolutely. Common presets like Instagram (1080×1080), Twitter banner (1500×500), and Facebook cover (820×312) are supported via quick-select buttons.

Is there a batch or bulk resize option?

The current version resizes one image at a time. Batch resizing is available to Pro members via the dashboard.

Does this work on mobile devices?

Yes. The tool is fully responsive and works on smartphones and tablets running modern browsers like Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge.

What output format should I choose?

Use JPEG for photos (smaller file size), PNG for images needing transparency, and WebP for the best balance of quality and compression in web projects.
